The following lists of words are vocabulary words from the stories in your child’s reading textbook.

Theme 1 – Here I Am

Story: I Am Six

teacher: a person whose job is to teach other people

school: a place where teachers teach students

mouse: a small animal

hamster: a small animal

read: what we do with books

write: what we do when we make letters on paper with pencils or other writing tools

 

Story: What Do you Like?

rainbow: a curved band of many colors that sometimes appears in the sky after it rains

fruit: part of a plant that has the seeds of the plant in it

music: a pretty sound

mother: a woman who has at least one child

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Story: Faces

Different: not the same

special: something that is different

feeling: what you do with your hands and feet

thinking: what you do with your head

ears: part of your head that you use to hear with

hearing: what we use our ears fo

mouth: part of your face that is used for talking and eating

 

 

Theme 2 – Let’s Be Friends

Story: I Need a Friend

need: something you must have

myself: alone, no one is with you

friend: someone you like, who likes and helps you

sharing: giving some of what you have

listen: to hear, use your ears

picnic: a meal you eat outside

learn: to find out about something

march: to walk together taking the same size steps

explore: to look at, investigate and learn about something

earth: dirt or soil

watch: to look at something

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Story: The Chick and the Duckling

found: a form of the word find

caught: a from of the word catch

swim: to move in the water

chick: a baby chicken

duckling: a baby duck

shell: the hard, outside part of some animals

worm: a small animal that looks like a piece of rope and lives in the ground

 

Theme 3 – Animals Everywhere

Story: Hoot Howl Hiss

woods: an area where a lot of trees grow

farm: a large area of land where people grow food and raise animals

mountains: an area of land that rises high above the land around it

pond: a large amount of water, smaller than a lake, that is all in one place

 

Story: Good-Night, Owl!

owl: a bird with a large head and large eyes that sleeps during the day

squirrel: an animal with a big fur tail that lives in trees and likes to eat nuts

crows: a bird with black feathers

darkness: the opposite of lightness

moon: a big, bright object in the sky at night

woodpecker: a bird that pecks at a tree to look for food

 

Story: Little Elephant

elephant: a huge, gray animal that has big ears and a trunk

water: a kind of clear liquid

splash: to scatter liquid around

bubbles: something that is round, has air in it and looks like a balloon

trunk: part of an elephant that looks like a very long nose

hurry: to do something quickly

waiting: to stay in one place until something happens or someone comes

hard: something that is difficult to do

 

Theme 4 – The World We Share

Story: As the Crow Flies

mountains: very high hills

stream: a small river

meadow: a grassy field

path: a trail for people or animals

garden: a place to grow flowers or vegetables

road: a place for people and cars to travel

streets: roads in cities or towns

harbor: a safe place to keep boats

 

Story: My River

river: a large stream of flowing water that starts in one place and empties into an ocean, a lake,

or another river

home: the place where people or animals live

everyone’s: something that belongs to more than one person

 

Story: I Am Eyes/Ni Macho

awake: not sleeping

grasses: something that grows green and tall

flowers: something that has petals and a stem

pelicans: a large bird that has a pouch under its bill that it uses to catch fish

 

skies: the area above the land

sand: tiny grains of rock that people walk on at the beach

 

Theme 5 – Just Imagine

Story: Pretend You’re a Cat

pretend: to make-believe

chew: to grind something up with your teeth

drink: to put liquid in your mouth and swallow it

touch: to put your fingers on something

 

Story: It Looked Like Spilled Milk

sometimes: once in a while, not all of the time

spilt: spilled

milk: a kind of liquid

mitten: a warm covering for your hand

birthday: the day that a person was born

sheep: an animal that has four legs and is covered with wool

 

Story: EEK! There’s a Mouse in the House

send: to make something or someone go somewhere

chase: to run after

catch: to grab something

knock over: to cause something to fall over

mistake: to accidentally do something wrong

shout: to talk in a loud voice

 

Story: George Shrinks

shrinks: to get smaller

woke up: to stop sleeping

trouble: a problem caused by doing something you are not supposed to do

dreamt: dreamed

parents: your mother and father

 

Theme 6 – Changes in the Weather

Story: What Will the Weather Be Like Today?

weather: what it is like outside

warm: not hot and not cool

snow: small white pieces of ice that fall from clouds

frost: very thin ice that freezes on windows or in the ground

lizard: a reptile with four legs, a scaly body and a long tail

steam: When water gets very hot, it becomes steam. It looks like white smoke.

cloudy: when the sky has clouds in it

 

Story: The Wind and the Sun

strong: the opposite of weak

cape: a piece of cloth worn as a coat

blow: what the wind does to move things

blew: a form of the word blow

tightly: fitting closely or held firmly

shade: an area that has less light than areas around it

 

Story: Rain Talk

raindrops: the water that drops from clouds

highway: a road

headlights: the lights on the front of a car or truck

umbrella: something that is used to keep someone dry when it is raining

windowpanes: the glass in a window

surface: the outside or top part of something

 

Story: When Summer Comes

summer: one season of the year

fairs: special events where people buy and sell things

beach: an area of land at the edge of lakes or oceans that is covered with sand

harvest: the planted fruit, vegetables, and grain that are ready to be picked

vegetables: plants such as beans, peas and squash that can be eaten raw or cooked

Fourth of July: a special summer holiday that celebraters the day the United States became

a country

 

 

Theme 7 – Tell Me a Story

Story: Moon Rope

mole: a small animal that lives underground

crescent: the shape of the moon sometimes

climb: to crawl up something

hitch: to attach to something

tunnel: underground or underwater openings that some animals make

creatures: animals

 

Story: Baby Rattlesnake

rattlesnake: a poisonous snake that has hard rings that make a rattling noise

baby: a very young child or animal

young: the opposite of old

scare: frighten

warn: tell about danger

 

 

 

 

 

Story: Stone Soup

traveler: someone who goes from one place to another

soup: a kind of food made with water and pieces of meat and vegetables

wolf: a wild animal that looks like a dog

turnip: a plant with a round, white or yellow root that is eaten as a vegetable

peas: a kind of vegetable that is small, round, and green

beets: vegetables with round, red roots that are eaten

meat: a kind of food that comes from animals

wise: smart

 

Story: Lazy Lion

lazy: not willing to work hard

badger: a kind of animal that has white fur on the top

aardvarks: an African animal with big ear, long heads with piglike noses, and long tongues

underground: under the ground

crocodile: a large cold-blooded animal with thick, scaly skin, a long body, a pointed snout, and four

short legs

build: to put something together

stump: the part of a tree trunk that is left when a tree has been cut down

 

Theme 8 – Watch Me Grow!

Story: Changes

changes: becomes different

autumn: a season between summer and winter

seasons: the four parts of the year

mare: a female horse

fawn: a young deer

 

 

sow: a full-grown female pig

foal: a very young horse

 

Story: The Leaving Morning

someplace: means the same as somewhere

movers: people who takes boxes and furniture to a new home

apartment: a building where many people live

cousins: the sons and daughters of someone’s aunt or uncle

grocer: a person who sells food

 

Story: Lizzie and Harold

secrets: something told to someone special and hidden from others

promises: agreeing to do something

Cat’s Cradle: a game played by passing a looped piece of string from one player to another to

make different designs

 

Story: Arthur’s Pet Business

responsibility: being able to take care of something or do something

business: what someone does to make a living

job: work done for money

puppies: young dogs

earn: to get pay for work

dollars: money; worth 100 cents
