Tips for Choosing Books for Children

  1. Determine your child’s interests, and then help them find books on their favorite subjects during visits to the library or bookmobile.
  2. Involve your child in the selection of books and honor his/her preferences whenever possible.
  3. Ask friends or relatives for recommendations.
  4. Look for books that have illustrations that match the text of the story.
  5. Ask your child’s teacher for book suggestions.
  6. Consult lists of recommended books.
  7. For beginning readers, choose books that repeat key words or phrases or that contain familiar songs or rhymes.
  8. For young readers (ages 6-9), choose stories with one or two sentences per page. As their reading skills increase, you can gradually introduce longer stories.
  9. Offer opportunities to discover books in a variety of genres-such as classics, folktales, mythology and poetry.
  10. Remember, the best test of a "good" children’s book is your child’s reaction to it. Trust your own judgement and instincts.
