Tips for Choosing Books
for Children
- Determine your child’s interests, and then help them find books on their
favorite subjects during visits to the library or bookmobile.
- Involve your child in the selection of books and honor his/her preferences
whenever possible.
- Ask friends or relatives for recommendations.
- Look for books that have illustrations that match the text of the story.
- Ask your child’s teacher for book suggestions.
- Consult lists of recommended books.
- For beginning readers, choose books that repeat key words or phrases or
that contain familiar songs or rhymes.
- For young readers (ages 6-9), choose stories with one or two sentences per
page. As their reading skills increase, you can gradually introduce longer
stories.
- Offer opportunities to discover books in a variety of genres-such as
classics, folktales, mythology and poetry.
- Remember, the best test of a "good" children’s book is your child’s
reaction to it. Trust your own judgement and instincts.
